Some numbers are just numbers. Q Plates Tell a story.
First issued in 1921, Q·597 was originally registered to Foggitt, Jones & Co. — the Brisbane provision pioneers founded in 1904 by two former Hutton’s men who took over a struggling little factory at Oxley and turned it into a household name.
Within five years they were turning over more than a million pounds a year. Their “Rex” hams and bacon fed banquet halls and kitchens right across a young nation, and later provisioned Australian troops through the war. Thomas Llewellyn Jones went on to sit in Queensland’s Parliament and command the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron; Charles Foggitt’s own sons served on the Western Front.
Their name still stands today — ghosted across the brickwork of their old South Brisbane warehouse, built in 1919 and heritage-listed a century on.
