Maria Theresa “Minnie” Lightoller (née Haly),
In 1921, when Queensland’s motor vehicle register opened the Q-series, Maria Theresa Lightoller of Albion
took ownership of plate Q513. She was in her mid-sixties at the time — a rare female motorist in a transport era still overwhelmingly dominated by men.
Her registration alone, without joint male name, is unusual for
the period and reflects both her independent means and her standing in Brisbane society.
Maria was born 13 September 1855 into the Haly family of Queensland pastoral and political prominence.
She married Dr Harry Martin Lightoller, a respected Brisbane physician, and the couple
lived at “Highlands” in Albion — then a fashionable inner-northern suburb of Brisbane favoured by the
medical and merchant classes.
Maria outlived her husband by some three years. She died 9 August 1924, aged 68, and is buried alongside
Dr Lightoller at Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane.
